Improving food security of women and children by enhancing backyard and small scale poultry production in the southern delta region

Overview
Poultry rearing is an integral part of the culture in rural Bangladesh and a key component in traditional farming systems. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided funds to the Food Security and Nutritional Surveillance Project (FSNSP) to conduct the baseline survey of the project “Improving food security of women and children by enhancing backyard and small-scale poultry production in the southern delta region”. The project was conducted in 2014 with the objective to significantly contribute towards reducing food and nutrition insecurity and enhancing household income in the southern delta region of Bangladesh, with special focus placed on women and children.
The baseline survey provided an assessment of the backyard and small-scale poultry production in 10 selected intervention unions in two districts of Bangladesh - Khulna and Barisal. For data collection, the survey followed the quantitative approach, with the household respondents being either: women of child bearing age (15-49.9 years), or mothers or caregivers having children five years of age, or pregnant and lactating women.
